Serve the City Maastricht organizes a Neighbourhood day every month in a specific neighborhood, where we help local organizations and residents in a practical way, by doing all kinds of practical work. A new coat of paint for the old people’s home, the cleaning of the community center, refurbishing public places and gardens.

We offer residents opportunities to roll up their sleeves and serve with the volunteers and organizations they meet. In this way, we build up and strengthen the mutual social cohesion in the neighbourhood. Everyone wears the same t-shirt and together you work on the same project. You do not see where someone comes from, and through conversations, you get to know each other. In this way, we work towards fighting social inequality, and we make an appeal to the social involvement of residents, volunteers and organizations. We try to make connections between the residents (students, poor-rich, young-old, immigrant-locals, single-family) who might not meet each other in usual circumstances.

During a Neighborhood day, there are also small jobs in and around the houses of local residents like painting the house, mowing the grass, tidying up, maintaining the garden, etc. These requests are presented by care providers from ‘Social Teams’, the ‘Veilige Buurten Team’ or by the residents themselves. Welfare workers (community workers, youth workers, district service points and social work by Trajekt, Mondriaan, Radar, MEE, the district nurse, Levanto, Team Jeugd, WMO) of the ‘Social Team’ and ‘Veilige Buurten team’ know the personal living situation of these residents and help connect us with individual needsrequests for help and . If the situation in life is very intense, we ask a ‘Social Team counselor’ to take part in this neighborhood day, in order to support the residents in a tailored way and to act as translators for the volunteers. In addition, the care provider follows up with the resident further. For example, the maintained garden or refurbished home remains neat because the carer permanently encourages and motivates the resident to maintain it. In this way, the Neighborhood Days provide a sustainable outcome in the lives of the residents.
